Global warming is simple terms means warming of globe i.e. rising of overall temperature of earth. Today Earth as an ecosystem is changing. More carbon dioxide is now in the atmosphere than has been in the past 650,000 years.
The reason we exist on this planet is because the earth naturally traps just enough heat in the atmosphere to keep the temperature within a very narrow range - this creates the conditions that give us breathable air, clean water, and the weather we depend on to survive. But we humans have some where taken nature for granted and now it’s the time for nature to answer back! We've overloaded the atmosphere with heat-trapping gasses from our homes, cars and factories and power plants.
According to the report, “ Global warming has already cause the massive ice sheets in the Arctic to melt at alarming rates”. This will cause the oceans to rise. Rising ocean levels, an estimated six feet over the next 100 years or sooner, will cause massive devastation and economic drain to population centers near the coastal regions worldwide.
Food and Water shortages are likely to increase in Asia, rising temperatures and extreme weather patterns have already taking their toll on crop yields. And India, Pakistan and Bangladesh top nature's hit list, or is it heat-list! The world has already seen Hurricane Katrina and the Asian Tsunami, apart from a host of recent natural disasters like floods, droughts and earthquakes which are evidences of global warming. India's long coastal perimeter is a blanket invitation to the oceans. Indeed, instead of us going to the beaches, the sea may visit us often. What a sea change!
some animals are already moving to new homes. If the warming gets worse, as scientists expect, there may be some kinds of plants and animals that become extinct. Some areas may become too dry for farming.
The industrial activity has already pumped huge quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere, depleteting the protective ozone and exposing the earth to the relentless solar heat and radiation.
The recent further increase in concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is because of the result of human activities, mainly the burning of fossil fuels. As the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere will increased, so will the average surface temperature of the earth.
The relationship between atmospheric CO2 concentration and surface temperature is shown here for the past 150 years
The irreversibility of the warming process is a chilling truth. Reports quoting scientists say that the CO2 that is already in the air would keep the temperatures rising for centuries on, even if the entire world were to stop polluting from today.
Of late, However the stress has been shifted to 'Adaptation', in the spirit of enduring what one cannot cure. Several countries are gearing up in tune with their threat perceptions. The Netherlands, for instance, which is already below sea level, is hiking up its famous dykes. Iceland is a pioneer in capturing the CO2 in the air and burying it in the depths of the earth --a process called sequestration.
While the world over, climate concerns are major political issues, politics in India remains largely immune to it. No party, mainstream or local, seems to entertain an awareness or view!
How ever , Citizen of city 21st century can surely do their bit and help slow down the pace of global warming.
The following are things that one can easily adapt and include in their daily lifestyle.
1) Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Use fluorescent bulbs in your room.
2) Turn off your computer or the TV when you’re not using it. Unplug chargers when not in use.
3) Wait until you have a lot of clothes to wash before using the washing machine. Don’t use the machine for one item just because it’s your favorite shirt!.
4) Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy.
5) On a hot day, dress lightly instead of turning up the air conditioning. Or use a fan.
5) Dress warmly when it’s cold, instead of turning up the heat.
6) Walk short distances instead of asking for a ride in a car.
7) Trees suck up carbon dioxide and make clean air for us to breathe. Save 2,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
8) Carpool When You Can
9) Replace 3 frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
10) Buy Organic Food
11) Using your own cloth bag instead of plastic or paper bags reduces waste and requires no additional energy.
